CHIEFTAIN TANK. Had interesting session yesterday inside it freeing seized cables operating the GUE (auxiliary engine). The interior of the AVLB is cavernous – almost big enough for a party down there!
The Chieftain may be needed to run for several weeks over Dec/Jan (yes, it will be cold) on an important Defence related trial – and we’ll need extra people to help.
1. Experienced Chieftain DM or ‘A’ mech or similar.
2. An assistant. No technical quals but practical with a real interest in tanks.
From midday on Saturday 17th Dec and Friday 30th Dec.
Features: a short taster drive and ride in one of our Armoured Personnel Carriers and an ex Parachute Regt Supacat 6×6 followed by hot winter soup and a sandwich. Then inspect our extensive private collection of military vehicles.
Finally, come and have a pint and a chat with us at our local, The Waggon Inn, ‘twixt Belsay and Ponteland. John and Brenda are known for their excellent ales, food and hospitality.
Drivers £50 per person, (aged 16-21 £30pp).
Observers £12.50 per person (Under 21 £7.50)
Uniformed Cadets, Scouts – £2.50
Transport from Newcastle may be available.
Limited numbers, early booking essential.
Call Dan or Richard for further details
Apart from the tanks you can also tackle (if you are fit enough!)
A Bedford TM 8 ton 4×4 cargo truck,
The chunky Foden 6×6 gun tractor or limber (there’s room for 1 passenger) with its 20 gears, numerous cross axle and diff locks- amazing vehicle off road,
Alvis Stalwart 6×6 amphibious truck,
Supacat 6×6 – ex parachute regiment, an accomplished ‘All Terrain Vehicle’,
Huge ex RAF 6×6 Thornycroft Mk IX Fire/Crash/Rescue truck with 300 hp Cummins V8 and auto gearbox (with space for several passengers in this cab).
Driving experiences are normally followed by a tour of our extensive private collection: several different tanks, airfield fire tenders, cranes and the impressive German Bridging Ferry.

After unstinting efforts by our expert team of mechanics led by Ken (actually only Ken) we can now proudly claim that all four APC’s are on the button – for the first time. (The fifth has been sold to Georges Millarec and is destined for Brittany soon).
Another is heading to Pennsylvania to live with Fabio in East Stroudsburg. He reckons that it will better protect him from unruly students in his history class at the high school. So, Fabio, did you want the .303 Bren light machine gun as well?
Fantastic afternoon, fantastic people, fantastic weather, the APC performed better than ever – a good time had, we hope, by all (despite having to wait two months).
We were too busy to take pics, so please email or post yours on our Facebook wall – especially any action shots or the vehicle silhouette against the night sky.
The .303 Bren Gun attracted much attention, and not just from the younger element. We also brought the 6×6 Supacat out for an airing – amazing vehicle.
Hope the owner of the shiny BMW was able to wash off the mud splattered on it by that rather close and over exuberant turn of the APC!
Finally special thanks to Ken, Dan, Josh, and Andrew for setting up and running the event. Cheers, Richard.
We are pleased to announce that we can now offer several very different types of weapon:
Ranging (sorry!) from .22/5.5mm bolt action compound gas with ten shot magazines/tele sights, to our largest piece, single shot 155mm (but not fired from the shoulder – needs a gun crew of 8 - our Foden gun tractor – and a 20 mile exclusion zone). You can shoot at knock down figures, or if more seriously inclined 5 bull targets and be aided by our Bisley coach. The rifles (we also have some pistols) are of traditional British/German manufacture. If shooting becomes of special interest you may like to join an informal group – your weapons or ours – on a regular basis for practice. (Other FAC holders especially welcome). We can also guide you to a suitable club for small bore (.22) or full bore (such as our classic .303 Lee Enfield) shooting at ranges to 600 yards.
If you are an enthusiastic and experienced rifle shot, interested in coaching others on the odd day or weekend, please tell Richard.
The Hovercraft is officially out of the shipyard! We are currently testing it on different terrain.
